Hair Sculptures/Wefting Eyelashes

For this design I wanted to weft my own eyelash, with fine long thread. I attempted to weft; however, I had forgotten the correct techniques. Therefore, I started some research in order to correct the technique.
After reading the Patsy Baker book I started my weft again, repositioning my sticks and wefting in the method explained. My wefts were now tightening up and forming the eyelashe.
Second Attempt:

For the hair of this design I wanted to be able to form shapes and height, using Salvador Dali’s work as inspiration. I created this ‘lace hair’ technique taught to me by one of the hairdressers from the hair show I worked on in Plymouth. The technique involves backcombing the hair and pulling it out, I then sprayed it with got2b hairspray put inside cling film and used weight on top to flatten the hair. I used a hairdryer to speed up the process. The hair came out flat and crispy in a sheet like form which enabled me to make some uniformed shapes from.

Experimentation with hair

I really love the effect of these hair sculptures they look simple but effective. The hair is synthetic and looks as thought it was been backcombed and sprayed to create a stiff shape easy to sculpt with. I feel like the mesh hair can relate to my theme of psychological disorders. The hair being wrapped around the head looks as though it is strangling, or it could represent the disorders burden growing on the body and taking over their life.
Experimentation with bleaching the eyelash. I wanted the eyelash to be lighter in colour, I could house hod bleach which did not effect the colour of the eyelash
I continued with this technique and wrapped the backcombed hair around balloons to form a round shape. I had to paint on PVA glue and use the hair thinly let to dry thoroughly and paint for layers of hair. After I left the hair sculptures to dry for a couple of days I sprayed got2b glue hair spray and I popped the balloons to reveal a round ball like shape for my hairpiece

Creating an optical illusion for my shoot. These garden decorations spin and create a blurred effect, this is an interesting look to represent the hallucinations experienced by someone living with a psychological disorder.
