Flocking/Hair Punching

Wayne's Demo:

Flocking

Notes-

  • Flocking creates a static field

  • Flock comes in different colours and various lengths.

  • If you want to flock silicone you need silicone adhesive. (One hour shower with a bit of naphtha)

  • Anywhere that is covered in glue will get flocked.

  • You can change the size of the flocking machine by sticking tape on it.

Examples of flocking on skin and on silicone

Fur transfer, Flocking & Hair Punching by Deborah Galvez

Punching

  • helps to blend the edge of the fur transfer and the flocked areas

  • Using angora hair

  • Making needles -you'll need- Holder/pin vice, Beading needle, Cutters, John james needles

  • Cut the top and break the arm off

  • Sand down slightly so it's not too sharp as it can rip silicone or foam

  • They would blend the colours of the hairs  before punching them in

Use eye protection as it gets very messy

The guns come with their own screens which are usually plastic, she makes a bigger grid screen as it allows the longer hair to come through

She uses the hairdryer to train the hair in the right direction and to move the excess hair

What materials won't work? Synthetic fur. It just balls up

It is much harder to work with longer hair

It is best to start with lighter colours and go over with darker colours

She uses a brush to train the hair

The brush has short bristles so you have more control over training the hair

Always refer back to your photos

Sometimes they would create darker shadows with paint

Keep walking away and looking with fresh eyes

smaller cups are harder to use the hair doesn't come out as well

top up bald spots as you go

you need to be aware of gravity, underneath areas may not have hair

Her secret- she cuts some coyote pelt (for the long tufts inside the ears) and applies it with prosade

How many layers of flocking can you do? As soon as the shiny glue has gone

Usually they would allow to dry before punching

Paint prosade on evenly, you only need one coat.

Dry it with the dryer until it's clear

Apply the transfer

For the flocking it is useful to have reference images to see what hair you want and the direction to make it look more realistic

There are a range of flocking guns you can buy on eBay but they are very expensive

She uses different sized brushes to paint on the prosade (one coat, two layers would be too much) which needs to be applied carefully

She goes lighter with the glue application in the eyes and mouth areas as they have the most movement

Deborah gives her secret touches to her work, the small details make the difference of making the piece look realistic. She lays on the hair with her fingers in a similar motion to the punching
