Psychological Disorders
Psychology has always been an area of interest for me, I feel it is an interesting broad field that I could start my research in and which will hopefully lead me to some interesting ideas to create a makeup.
Disorders to look at:
Bipolar disorder a mental disorder that is characterised by serious mood swings [mood swing n.
Alternation of a person's emotional state between periods of euphoria and depression] A person with bipolar disorder will experience alternating “highs” (clinicians call “mania”) and “lows” (depression). Both of these areas may be brief, from a few days, or longer, lasting from several weeks or months. Some people may be unaware that they have bipolar as they will experience brief periods of these intense [existing or occurring in a high or extreme degree] moods.
A manic [Synonyms: frenzied, agitated, frantic] episode is when someone will experience extreme happiness, extreme irritability, hyperactivity, little need for sleep and/or racing thoughts which can lead to rapid speech.
The depressive state is characterised by extreme sadness, low energy level, a lack of interest in life, an inability to enjoy pleasurable activities, feelings of helplessness [deprived of strength or power; powerless; incapacitated] and hopelessness. On average, someone with bipolar disorder may have up to three years of normal mood between the two states of mania or depression. During the episodes the person may find it difficult to lead a normal life and can be unable to distinguish reality [the state or quality of being real]
Inspirational images related to Bipolar Disorder

This image shows a clear representation of the emotion felt in terms of feeling hopelessness and helpless. The several hands represents to me how they are eating up the individual, possibly how one with bipolar may feel, as if their personaility and normal life is being consumed
This image is interesting as it shows a skeletal-death type features shining through the face, for me this could represent a second personality coming through-possibly that isn't wanted by the first personality.
The image below involves the same context, the piece is a gelatin prosthetic, the idea coming from this is the other personality taking over.
I love the texture and depth of this image, I felt like it relates to the depressive state of bipolar as the character looks as though he is in a deep low state of mind. The skin replicates bark or wood giving the illusion of there being an empty coldness to his being, completely lifeless.
From Bipolarvillage.com- I came across an article written by someone who suffers from bipolar:
"One part of what makes dramatic improvisation work is what Freud called “counter-transference.” That is, we often pick up certain cues from how other people see us, and start to internalize that role. I’ve increasingly found that I’m very good at behaving in the way that other people expect me to behave, and that I actually find myself partially being who people expect me to be. This has enabled me to present well, filling the appropriate role in the appropriate situations."

There are some interesting ideas on how they cope with the disorder, also, some theories made by Freud that I could research further into.

This image is also very interesting and could be a great inspiration for a makeup. The face has totally been taken away, whilst the hands hold two faces; one which is sad, and one which is happy, linking well to the bipolar disorder. In terms of makeup ideas I could recreate these two faces and either have them away from the face or even on the face- in this case I am thinking the two faces could be on each side of the original face, therefore there being three sides to the models head, which the camera could film 360' to show all the sides of emotions.

Schizophrenia
The disorder of schizophrenia has been around for decades, and is now known as a source of bewilderment [a confusing maze or tangle, as of objects or conditions]
In historical times someone with the illness is thought to be possessed [spurred or moved by a strong feeling, madness, or a super natural power] by demons and were feared, tormented, exiled or locked up forever.
Despite advances in the research and understanding of this disorder, schizophrenia continues to puzzle professionals and the public. It is difficult for an average person to understand the odd behavior, hallucinations [a sensory experience of something that does not exist outside the mind, caused by various physical and mental disorders, or by reaction to certain toxic substances, and usually manifested as visual or auditory images] or strange ideas that a schizophrenic person deals with.
As with many mental disorders, the causes are poorly understood. People often see someone with schizophrenia as being more violent or out of control than a person who has another kind of serious mental illness. A new recent insight from neuroscience and neuropsychology gives new hope for finding more effective treatments for the illness.
Schizophrenia is characterised by a broad range of unusual behaviors, (gender, race, social class or culture does not effect the disorder)-
Delusions & hallucinations are common in schizophrenia:
The most common being the impairment to how someone thinks. The individual will lose much of the ability to rationally evaluate their surroundings and interactions with others. They believe things that are not true, and have difficulty seeing what is reality. These behaviors often seem bizarre [markedly unusual in appearance, style, or general character and often involving incongruous or unexpected elements; outrageously or whimsically strange] to an observer.
For example, paranoia [baseless or excessive suspicion of the motives of others] is common in a schizophrenic, they may buy numerous locks for their doors, and always suspect someone is behind them. These behaviors’ can reflect the reaction to their false beliefs that others are out to get them.
One-third of those diagnosed with schizophrenia will attempt suicide, and are unlikely to share their suicidal intentions with others, making life-saving interventions more difficult. Depression therefore plays a large role in schizophrenia, resulting in suicidal actions. Some risks for this involve the patient imagining voices directing the person towards self-harm (auditory command hallucinations) and intense false beliefs (delusions) [a false belief or opinion]
The relationship with schizophrenia to substance abuse is significant. Due to impairments to insight and judgment, people with schizophrenia are less able to judge and control temptations leading them to drug or alcohol abuse. Sometimes the person may even try to self-medicate, by trying to control symptoms with mind-altering drugs, commonly nicotine, alcohol, cocaine, and marijuana.
Signs of someone starting an episode of schizophrenia:
-
Social isolation and withdrawal
-
Irrational, bizarre or odd statements or beliefs
-
Increased paranoia or questioning others’ motivations
-
Becoming more emotionless
-
Hostility or suspiciousness
-
Increasing reliance on drugs or alcohol (in attempt to self-medicate)
-
Lack of motivation
-
Speaking in a strange manner inappropriate laughter
-
Insomnia or oversleeping
-
Deterioration in personal appearance and hygiene

This piece is by a Japanese artist who has used acrylic paint to paint he body, "bored with digitally enhanced pictures". I started to look at illusional images that I could use as inspiration to create a makeup piece that could represent schizophrenia, such as the feelings of isolation or emotionless.

I will be dictionary defining certain words during my research in bold, this is to help me to understand, appreciate and trigger my mind for broader research and to create an indepth thought about how the disorders are being described.

This image gives a visual indication of how someone may feel locked up in an asylum with the disorder. The illusion of the overlapping facial features are what I find interesting about this image, I also find it effective being in black and white. This has encouraged me to think about the representation of colour in my makeup, and how colours represent the state of ones mood

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Whilst researching images related to the words associated with the disorders I have come across many artists work that I find are inspiring me with my makeup ideas, here are two portraits by Andrew Salgado. The colours and the abstract shapes could be a well recognised portrayal of someone in the state of two minds, under distress, or even experiencing hallcinagenic images in their conscious.
Both images: (no date e). Available at: http://www.andrewsalgado.com/work/2015 (Accessed: 2 April 2015).
Winter depression/winter blues is common for those that live in the northern climate. The clinical term being- seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Up to 5% of the population (especially in northern states) may suffer from this disorder. The disorder is characterised by feelings of sadness and depression during the winter months when temperatures drop, there is very little sun exposure, and the days are shorter. The depression is often associated with excessive eating, sleeping resulting in weight gain. Women are 2-3 times more likely to suffer from the disorder than men.
To reduce symptoms of depression during the winter it is advised for you to spend as much time as possible in daylight, and to keep active. Maintaining a regular sleep pattern will help to keep depression at bay, as well as therapy. Another technique to help expose oneself to more light is to buy brighter full spectrum light bulbs, as they provide light that is similar to natural sunlight.

I love the eerie-ness of this image; it could well represent the physical side to winter, but also the emotional side of the personality and soul being taken away. The eyes and the colours help to do this, the mist of the white powder looks like snow and helps to disguise the face taking away any identity or life she has.
All of the images are fashion based, but with a creative twist which is what is drawing me to create a creative fashion piece. This image also creates an emotion, I like the texture and styling of the hair away from the face, the dry texture also reflects how lifeless someone is in the state of depression.
As also seen in the first image, the hands and nails in the image look very animalistic/creature like, these concepts have made me think about more than just the face and body for my makeups, but also the hands, feet, hair etc. It would be a new experimentation for me if I were to make pieces for the hands or to make my own false nails.
