Body Painting
Preparation and Planning:
Makeup kit and products/budgeting
-
you can use ready made child proof pigment paint (which is cheaper) which can be mixed with latex and fullers earth
-
make your own stencils (acetate can be used)
-
you can use hot pens that cut into plastic to make stencils
-
you can contact companies and ask them to fund the products that you need
-
use hairgel mixed with glitter
-
airbrushing kits are useful for the face but wouldnt usually be used for the whole body
-
good to have a range of brushes (large soft brushes) and stipple sponge, also masking tape
-
aqua colours can be difficult to build up colour and not good if you need it to be waterproof
-
mac products are great but they can stain (head and shoulders helps to remove the paiint)
-
shimmer eye shadows are great contrast with matte colours
-
krylon body and gface paint (heavily pigmented)
-
use fixing spray NYE to fix into place
-
you need makeup wipes, tissues, cotton buds, primer, vaseline, duo adhesive
-
be careful as sweat can dissolve glues, you can use prosade if they are going to sweat a lot
Carolyn is one of the world’s leading body artists. She has won industry awards and is a double world Body Painting champion. In 2010 she was crowned CIBTAC Body Artist of the year. She is based in London but gets to regularly travel throughout the UK and internationally. Her body paining is constantly featured in television advertisements, music videos, magazines, and CD/book covers. Carolyn produces amazing camouflage effects (as seen below) tattoos and fine art prints. She also teaches master classes in both make-up and body painting in the UK and America.
After doing some more research into body painting I have come to realise it’s popularity within the media and how it is used. Carolyn’s work is truly spectacular to see, she is extremely talented with painting. I have never considered this to be a career of mine, however, as I feel my fine art background is strong and also my skills in painting, I have started to consider this to possibly be a part of my career and definitely an area I would like to work on at some point in my make-up career.

-
design what your body paint will look like, use various techniques and medias such as a collage to put your ideas together
-
you need to find out what your requirements are, what styles are needed and the materials needed
-
you need to know how much of the body needs to be painted. This will help you to decide how long it is going to take-sometimes you will be given a certain time you can work with
-
use internet images, films, magazines, instagram photgrpahs, nature, art and books for inspiration
-
you will need special underwear for your model
-
it is a better idea to use a dancer as they have a muscular phisique and have confidnece in their bodies. it is also best to have a model with a smaller chest as it is easier to paint
-
it is your responsilbility to loo afgter your model so you need to make sure they are warm (use heaters and a woooly hat) and also have drinks and water during the body paint
-
preparation will save you a lot of time
-
make sure your assitants know what they are doing
-
be organised, prepare wigs before hand
-
use cap plastic or latex painted on a flat surface (or you can use fine lace) paint with clear nail varnish and stick sequins onto it, this can act as a quick sheet of glitter.
-
the body paint can be used to create an illusion
-
the industry is constantly chaning so you need to stay current and check the new products that are out
-
be the best assistant you can be
-
keep yourself promoted and updated (business cards etc)
-
focusing dark colours on the outside of the body will be more flattering

Phyllis comes from an illustration and fine art background. Her research comes from a range of areas such as analyzing faces, studying sculpture, painting, design, photography, sociology, facial attractiveness, anthropometrics, forensics, and perceptual psychology (a field I endeavor to also find in-depth research on). She has been painting and drawing faces for over 35 years, this volume of practice explains her perfection in her skills for her artworks. I feel like this would also improve myself, as an artist, continuously designing and drawing will strengthen the relationship between the eye and hand thus improving artistic skills.
Above we see her work in advertisements which are very effective (image 1 and 2). Image 3 (named: Beauty Icing') and image 4 (named: Beauty Melt). The images show the various works she has created, very effective images that are very thought provoking.

These images I feel can be linked to my porject theme of 'living in a different world', they send out a strong message and could well be linked to the psychological disorders I am researching

"For me art is all about creating a subconscious feeling or atmosphere. I’m not really looking to change peoples views or opinions with my art, I just want them to feel something ...
"I like art, in all forms, that creates an atmosphere, provokes a reaction and gets people discussing..........whether that be good or bad. My aim is for my work to split everyone down the middle to the extremes; I want 50% of people to love my work and the other 50% to despise it. That way I will know I have created something that generates multiple emotions. My worst fear is someone seeing my work and having exactly the same reaction as the last person had to it."

I used this painting as reference and for inspiration for my makeup, I felt like the image really conveyed a sense of several personalities into one, which links well with my project proposal of psychological disorders, the bipolar disorder especially. I found this image on Pinterest, and decided to look at more of his work. His painting creations are extremely interesting; he carries a unique style for the content of his work and the style and colours he uses. I love his statement about using his work to create an atmosphere, and a feeling. I hope to create this in my final makeups, id like to provoke emotion but in a none-offensive manner. His work is inspirational; I am finding artists are really influencing my direction towards my designing.
I wanted to create the illusion of another personality coming through onto Georgia’s face, and so I used Carl’s painting as reference to paint. I used Aqua colours and small paint brushes on her face, it was particularly difficult for me to paint this small and on a convex surface, but I feel the final result worked well. I had no intention of how the makeup would look and after painting the faces I felt like a bold background would help for them to stand out more and represent them coming from a dark part of the mind/personality.
