Wefting

Wire wefts are used for making circular hairpieces, called chignons. To make a honeycomb mesh template, draw 3 circles onto cling film on a soft block. Add petals to the inner and outer circles and cover with selotape. To measure how much weft will be needed, pin thread around the pattern, starting in the centre. Mark on where the circumference starts and ends..

Set up the weaving frame with a strand of weaving silk on the top and bottom notch, and 0.7mm wire in the middle. Allow for 50cm of excess on each. Using strands of human hair, feed the root ends through and begin with a starting knot. Weave the circumference first using flat weft, then continue using wig weft, all with 2cm turn backs. Keep the weft secured with a jockey.

Once woven, complete 2cm more to be on the safe side and end with a finishing knot. Cut the silks, leaving ~8cm of excess and knot together tightly. Cut the wire 2cm away from the weft and turn it back on itself with pliers, sewing over the shiny metal with thread that matches the hair colour. Bend the weft around the template and add in a few stitches at every meeting point. Finally, sew a hair comb to the inside of the chignon.

Once sewn around the template shape, ensure that the flat weft goes around the outer circumference.
