The concept of beauty notes

  • Face facts: is beauty personal taste or the golden ratio. (If you fit the ratio you are deemed to be more beautiful)

  • Science in relation to beauty. Physiology- the physical side of beauty (there is scientific evidence as to what can be deemed as beautiful)

  • Different things will determine how we decide what is beautiful.

  • Cultures- bishonen, bleaching, surma, Kayan tribe.-bigger the lip plate the more the beautiful. They have their lip pieces and teeth knocked out as that is what is deemed to them as beautiful. The bigger it is the more value the women has.

  • Bishonen- beautiful youth boy. They aim for a androgynous look.

  • Skin bleaching- India culture. The lighter you are the more beautiful you are.

  • Kayan tribe. Taller the neck the more beautiful you are.

Can a universal rule stand in good stead against an endless number of ideals influenced by cultural definitions ?

It is a controversial issue that white people are deemed more beautiful in the fashion industry:

  • in 2008 a black model was used on the cover of vogue and it wasn't seen again until 2011.

  • In 2001 vogue published a front cover the title was the arrival of the Asian super model. But not one black or asian model was used.

  • Chanel runway 2011 60models no people of colour.

  • Quote from Jordur Donne- people in the industry say if you have a black face on the cover of a magazine it won't sell.

  • Newyork fashion week. 79% we're white, 9.76% were asian. 7.67%were black and 2.12% were Latina.

Questions - do you think there is a clear discrimination within the fashion industry towards models of a none white ethnicity?

Concepts of Beauty

An inetresting take from Cameron Russel she claims:

Image is superficial. But the way we look is powerful. Looks aren't everything.

There is still evidence of a smaller percentage of black women in the fashion industry, in this article:

"In 2010 I was selected to be one of the first black faces for a Marks & Spencer campaign. Many people in the industry questioned my motives. Being a musician and never having previously modelled, I was constantly asked "Why Marks & Spencer?" Only now can I fully understand the driving force that led me into the modelling world.

I began modelling because I was that young girl looking into the magazines and wondering why I didn't see more faces like mine looking back at me. Whatever tiny impact it made, I wanted to empower the young black women around me, to feel liberated at the inclusion of a black female in a high-profile British campaign"

I had never realised there was such a percentage difference in white to black models until I had looked into it in more depth. Whilst searching the covers for magazines, it supported this statement made..

I was very surprised to see when googling popular magazines that I saw 0 black models on the front covers, a small percentage of mixed race but the majority are white.

An extremely controversial music video with Miley, whereby she is naked through most of it, and implies many sexual connotations. As Miley's career started with a very popular programme Hannah Montanna, many young girls will still be looking up to her as a role model. Miley seems to be making a great statement with her individualtity, and sexuality, but this may be provoking the audience that views it.
