Key roles as an editorial hair stylist:

  • the fashion industry is forever gorwing and becoming more popular, it is important to keep up to date with what is current in the industry as we always want to see new looks

  • the images need to be sellable. The hair needs to make the photo so that it can sell

  • contempory looks need to be considered-it needs to be fresh and current

  • being creative and using hair props, hair pieces, hair extensions can boost volume and change shape

  • when styling, you need to consider where the camera is going to be, if it is not shooting from behind you can get away with leaving unwanted bits at the back of the hair, perfecting the look from the front

Some current images of editorial makeup and hair. The hair is kept very natural and messy looking. There is little experimentation with pink ends on the hair and black lips- the one piece of colour makes it realy stand out.  The skin is kept fresh and dewy and looks although there is little product on. The bottom image shows some argular brushstrokes framing the eyes which look really effective contrasting with a simple makeup.

My attempt

I wanted to create a lot of volume for the hair so I crimped all of the under layers. I sectioned the hair out but need to practise on keeping my technique neater and tidier. Heat protection was sprayed onto the hair before any heat applied to protect the hair.

Once I finished crimping I brushed it out with a back comb brush and added a large hair piece that was a close match to my models hair.

I practised different shapes and styles with the top section, tying it up, creating textures, smoothing it down into a bun. I tried to experiment with a variety of styles.

This is my favourite style, I like the 3 transitions from going from crimped, to smooth, to a messy loop bun. I used hair spray to sustain the volume.

For this style I wrapped the hair around itself and smoothed it with serum. When photographing I tried to bring all the hair forward to boost the volume.

I kept the skin looking natural with little colour as I wanted to exaggerate the henna design I drew onto the forehead. I experimented adding colour around the eyes and eyebrows, and also chaning the lip colour. I feel like this would have wporked  better if I had applied colour to either just the eyes or just the lips, both look a little too overpowering,

To exaggerate the volume of the hair I practised using a hair dryer from different angles, the image below has worked really well. I love how you can see the hair blowing across the chest-it is very effective. I am still not happy with the overall look of the makeup, and I still need to practise my hair styling, however, overall I feel I have produced a good image for editorial hair and makeup.

Working On Set

Working in collaboration with a photographer:

The concept for this shoot was a colour theme conflicting with emotions. I was asked to do this makeup using green colours, inspired by the emotion anger.

Firstly, I prepped the skin with toner and moisturiser, followed by some foundation, I matched up the colour by testing on the jawline first. I powdered the makeup and used watercolour face paint to sponge on some fading effects of green around the eyes. The eyes tell a lot about emotion so I wanted to focus the makeup around the eyes. I applied the face paint very thickly around the eyebrows to cover them up

This makeup was for the emotion joy with the use of purple. I contoured the face with purple which you can see slightly in the professional photo, and used a bright mac purple lipstick. The model had interesting shaped lips, so I wanted to exaggerate this. I used a white shimmer to open up the eyes, which flattered her shape.

For the hair I gave volume but only to the bottom section. This worked really well when the model moved in the shoot

Here I have collaborated with a hair dresser to create this fashion/editorial shoot. A plaited hair piece has been used on top of the head, and the hair plaited to one side. The bottom of the hair has been back combed. The makeup was a smokey eye with a nude lip, but I adjusted this through the shoot when topping up I changed the lip colour to red, which worked really well, especially in the shoot with the pink flowers, the lips really stand out
