WHAT MAKES US EVIL?

THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT

  • “They locked me in there in this little degrading outfit”

  • What happens when you put people in an evil place? Does the institution come to control your behaviour or does the things inside of you (your attitudes your morality) allow you to rise above a negative environment?

  • Negative environment is a prison

  • Very little room with just a bed

  • There is a room called the hole (very small totally dark)

  • All the guards wore military uniform (they wanted to create a sense of power)

  • Psychological experiment for authority-teacher would ask the learner a question. Each time they got it wrong they gave an electric shock

  • The teacher was unaware the learner wasn't feeling any pain at all. 2/3s were prepared to administer a potentially fatal electric shock when encouraged to do so by what they perceived to be a legitimate authority figure-In this case a man in a white coat

  • Milgrim found that decent American citizens were as capable of commuted a tad against their conscious as the Germans had been under the Nazis. This experiment was testing people's reactions under a repressive regime.

  •

  •

  • After screened with psychology test the students were paid 15 dollars

  • As well as taking on the experiment zimbado took on the role of super intendant

  • Physical violence is not allowed

  • Prisoners were brought to the prison blindfolded to confuse their whereabouts

  • They were stripped and de-louse

  • The guards started making fun of their genitals and humiliating them

  • Start of a degradation process, (prisons and military use this process

  • "The first day may be very long and boring"

  • Day 2- prisoners tried to stir things up. (Rebellion wasn't expected but they were rebelling because of their status, against being anonymous and against having to give orders against the other students)

  • As punishment- he was put in the hole. The guards then thought they had to up the style of being tough

  • Prisoners were repeatedly woken in the night, they were made to do menial physical tasks and clean toilets with their bare hands

  • No day light so they had no idea of whether it was night or day

  •  One prisoner wanted to leave- instead the super intendant asked if he could be a snitch on the other prisoners. He went back and told the rest of the prisoners they could not leave. He believed that they would not let him go although he was never told that.

  • This really led the prisoners to believe it was a prison. They now felt hopeless. And showed signs of distress. He came up with a plan to act crazy to try and get out. He became really disturbed.

  • “An experience of being out of control”

  • Prisoner 819 wanted to leave.

  • As he tried to leave the rest of the prison chanted, "prisoner 819 did a bad thing" over and over. 819 began to cry and said he could not leave. He needed to be reminded.. This isn't real.

  • A new prisoner was entered (At an increased level of guard authority)

  • The other prisoners told the new prisoner he could not leave

  • Guard: “I just watched a movie called 'cool hand luke' and the mean intimidating southern prison warden character in that film really was my inspiration for that role that I created for myself”

  • Prisoner: "I began to feel like I was losing my identity" He decided to go on a hunger strike. He got put into the hole. The other prisoners were forced to bang on the door shouting abuse.

  • The study shows power corrupts. “Why does someone being abused by a spouse not stop it? We now understand that's not as easy as it sounds”

  • Prisoners felt shame in their role and the guards felt guilt. So in that sense, it is unethical. No one stopped the guards who got out of control

Notes:

This experiement was interesting to see the behaviour change of the inmates in this type of environment. This helps me to consider the past of my character, where they are from and their past experiences as well as their environment can all play a part in who he is.
