EVALUATION
The specialist project allowed me to create my own brief and exposed me to the responsibility to the crucial elements in my project such as organisation of time and efficiency, budget and creative risk taking.
For this project I created a work plan where I was able to organise my project week by week. This helped me to manage my time more efficiently consequently enabling me to keep on top of my work. I followed the work plan for the initial few weeks of the project, however during my making stages I underestimated the time it would take to complete each stage and did not allow for enough contingency time. As I spent longer on the making process in the project, I lost focus on the work plan and unfortunately it became less of a priority. Nevertheless, despite losing track of the work plan towards the end of the project, I did write a list of tasks to do day to day to help me organise my time and be more productive. During my time of making my prosthetics, there were more problems I faced that I did not predict in my work plan and although I allowed contingency time, it was not enough for me to keep on top of the workload. For my final major project I have confidence a work plan will benefit me in my organisation of the project, however, I need to be more realistic with my predictions and allow myself more time for areas of the project to go wrong. The problems I faced during my project lost me the time I had planned for several test makeups. For final major I will allow myself a considerable time for test makeups as I feel these are pivotal to a successful makeup.
In terms of budget I am confident I sought after the best value for money on all of the materials I used. This however, did cost me the quality of my tattoo application, which is something I need to revise for final major. If I had spent more money on my tattoo transfer paper I may not have had the issues I occurred with them for the day of filming. This is one aspect I regret in trying to save on budget. Although tests were completed on these, the difference of 2 hours compared to 5 was a detrimental factor to my whole makeup. It is very important to stay on budget, but only in the circumstance that the outcome is of as an equal high standard to a more expensive version. This is something I will need to revise at the start of final major, as I do not want to sacrifice quality in order to meet the budget.
My design thinking is an area I need to improve upon. Although initially I was not happy or confident with my overall ideas and designs, I wanted to take the risk and push myself to a new level of advancements. It gave me the opportunity to practice many areas of prosthetics, such as full head casting and a two-part fibreglass mould. These new avenues opened up my independent judgement throughout each stage of the process, particularly when it came to problem solving which is something I started to become confident with and enjoyed doing. Despite making numerous errors at these stages, I still was able to learn from them and improve for final major. As a critical reflection, I feel I was trying to take on too much, especially for a 20credit unit. If I had taken out 1 of my 3 areas of makeup (bald cap, facial prosthetics, tattoos) I know I could have perfected them more and spent more time on test makeups. This is also something I will take into consideration when designing for final major. I want to produce a level of work to a professional standard, and I have now come to realise quality is more valuable than quantity.
